Sexual Assault Services
You deserve safety, support, and compassion after sexual assault.
If you have experienced sexual assault or rape, reaching out for help takes tremendous courage — and you are not to blame for what happened. SAAFE House offers free, confidential services across Walker, Trinity, San Jacinto, and Polk counties, including medical accompaniment for forensic exams, legal advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling for all genders, safety planning, and referrals to specialized resources so you never have to navigate this alone.
Sexual assault can happen within relationships, between acquaintances, or by strangers, and it includes any unwanted sexual contact or behavior that happens without consent — whether through force, manipulation, coercion, threats, or when someone is unable to give consent. Many survivors experience shock, fear, shame, numbness, or confusion afterward, and it’s common to feel unsure about what to do next.
No matter your gender, age, or situation, your experience is valid. You do not have to decide anything right away, and you do not have to face the next steps alone. An advocate can help you understand your options and support you at your pace.
Medical Accompaniment
Support during Sexual Assault Nurse Examinations
If you choose to seek medical care after a sexual assault — including a Sexual Assault Nurse Examination (SANE), injury care, pregnancy prevention, or STI testing — a trained SAAFE House advocate can provide accompaniment and emotional support during the exam. Advocates help explain what to expect, remain with you if you want support, and ensure your questions and choices are respected throughout the process.
In the Huntsville area, we work closely with SANE nurses and medical providers to support compassionate, trauma-informed care. A forensic exam is always your choice — evidence is collected only if you consent. You can receive medical care and advocacy support even if you choose not to report to law enforcement.
Legal Advocacy
Helping you understand your options and feel supported.
If you choose to report the assault, our advocates can guide you through the process step by step. We can accompany you when speaking with law enforcement, help you understand your rights, and support you through any legal proceedings.
For students in Huntsville — including those at Sam Houston State University — we can also connect you with Title IX resources and accompany you in meetings if you choose to report through your campus system.
Reporting is always your decision. You are in control of what happens next, and our role is to support, inform, and stand beside you without pressure.
Trauma-Informed Counseling
Healing is a personal journey, and we are here to support you through it.
Sexual assault affects each survivor differently — emotionally, physically, and psychologically. Our trauma-informed counselors offer private counseling and support groups for survivors of all genders and ages, helping you rebuild confidence, process trauma, and regain control at your own pace.
We also offer specialized support for loved ones who may be struggling to understand or cope with the impact of the assault. Healing happens in community, and no one has to do it alone.
