How volunteers and interns support SAAFE House’s mission

Volunteers and interns play a meaningful role in helping SAAFE House provide free, confidential services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout Huntsville and the surrounding East Texas communities. Their support allows our team to expand our reach, strengthen our programs, and ensure that survivors can access compassionate, trauma-informed help whenever they need it.

Whether assisting with community education, helping at the This & That Boutique & Resale Shop, or gaining hands-on experience in victim services, volunteers and interns make a real difference in our mission as a Sexual Assault and Abuse Free Environment.

Supporting Community Education and Prevention

Volunteers often help our team share information about healthy relationships, consent, and available domestic violence and sexual assault resources in Huntsville and Walker County. This may include preparing materials for community education presentations, helping at domestic violence awareness events, or assisting with outreach tables where community members can learn about topics like recognizing signs of emotional abuse or what to do after sexual assault.

These efforts help us connect more people with free domestic violence services in Huntsville, family violence support, and sexual assault services that are confidential and accessible.

Helping With Donations and Shelter Support

Donation support is another vital way volunteers contribute. Helping sort and organize food, clothing, hygiene items, and other essentials ensures our emergency shelter for women and children stays stocked with what families need when they arrive seeking safety. Volunteers may also help manage donations that support survivors through our pantry wish list, back-to-school drives, and other community generosity.

Outreach and Administrative Assistance

Behind the scenes, volunteers help with administrative tasks that keep our crisis center operating smoothly. This may include preparing outreach materials, assisting staff with office projects, or helping organize resources for survivors seeking information and referrals, safety planning help, or support through our 24/7 crisis hotline serving Texas communities.

Supporting the This & That Boutique & Resale Shop

Our This & That Boutique & Resale Shop plays an important role in supporting SAAFE House programs, and volunteers help keep it thriving. Tasks may include sorting donations, assisting customers, creating displays, or helping with day-to-day shop operations. Every sale helps sustain free confidential support services for survivors in Huntsville and surrounding counties.

Hands-On Learning Opportunities for Students

Internships offer meaningful real-world experience for students in social work, psychology, criminal justice, and related fields. With guidance from trained advocates, interns may support crisis intervention services, assist with intakes and community referrals, or participate in educational outreach. These learning opportunities help prepare students for careers in victim advocacy, social services, and nonprofit work while strengthening the services we provide to survivors.

Intern roles always vary based on training, safety, and survivor needs, and we work closely with students to ensure a supportive, trauma-informed environment.
