Types of Volunteer Activities and Tasks
Volunteers are a large part of our agency, and SAAFE House would not be able to accomplish its mission with out volunteers. Volunteers at SAAFE House can be trained to the same level as an employee.
Volunteer Opportunities at SAAFE House are numerous and varied. Each one has the potential to put you in contact with victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Some of the various volunteer opportunities are listed below. As you read the list, think about tasks that interest you. Each volunteer task has different training requirements.
Clerical/Office/Reception Support: provide support to office staff through typing, data entry, filing, shredding, copying, donation processing, answering office phones, taking messages and customer service.
Resale Shop: Work with Elite Repeat staff to provide excellent customer service. Also tasks include but are not limited to sorting, hanging, pricing clothing, as well as help in a variety of ways at the resale shop.
Transportation: Assist clients with their transportation needs as requested through use of personal vehicle. I.e. doctor’s appointments, legal appointments, job interviews, church, etc. Also a volunteer can help transport items to Elite Repeat, the SAAFE House Resale Shop.
Community Education Support: Assisting the Education team in presentation opportunities and presentation materials. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or
Childcare Advocate: Provide supervision and care for children during counseling sessions, group meetings and/or a time mutually agreed upon by yourself, SAAFE House Staff and clients. This task requires constant communication between yourself and Staff in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for children. Ages of children range from infant to teenagers.
40 Hours Training:
Shelter Advocate: Support shelter staff in working with adult and child victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting in household chores, discussing parenting skills, providing information regarding job search, homework and coordinating recreation.
Hotline Advocate: Responsibilities include answering the 24-hour crisis hotline, providing caller with crisis intervention, resources, information and referrals.
Rape Crisis Advocate: Responsible for providing crisis intervention, peer counseling, support to family and friends, information and referral along with personal accompaniment to victims of sexual assault. Position could potentially require you to meet victims at the ER, police department, or the SAAFE House Office.
Legal Advocate: Responsible for assisting victims with the criminal justice system through aiding in the completion of protective order applications, crime victims compensation paperwork and accompaniment to court, the police department, district attorney’s office, etc.
On-Call: A mutually agreed upon time when a volunteer is responsible for assisting and supporting shelter staff in the event that a person is needed to help with client situations, transportation, emergency errands, and other tasks required by the shelter.
