SAAFE House was incorporated
in 1984 as the Walker County Family Violence Council to provide help,
shelter and support to victims of family violence. In 1989 it began offering
services to sexual assault survivors and the name was changed to SAAFE
House.
SAAFE House is an acronym for Sexual Assault and Abuse Free Environment.
SAAFE House has facilities in Walker and Polk Counties and serves all
surrounding areas. Our goal is to help victims of family violence and
sexual assault obtain the necessary skills to live abuse free. SAAFE House
offers a safe, supportive environment to victims and their children. In
addition, SAAFE House provides support services to the abusive family
members and helps families find nonviolent ways of coping with stresses
that may lead to abuse.
In its first year of operation, SAAFE House served 27 shelter clients,
33 non-shelter clients and took 141 Crisis Line calls.
Last year (FY 2005-2006), SAAFE House served 429 shelter clients (a total of 9,640 service days),
and 805 non-shelter clients (a total of 5,407 service days).
We are always interested in
sharing information about the situations that SAAFE House services address.
